The rate of living cationic polymerization of IBVE by HB/ZnX 2 (B=I, Cl, OCOCF 3 , X=I, Br, Cl) initiating systems decreased in the order. HI/ZnI 2 >HI/ZnCl 2 ≃HCl/ZnI 2 ≃HCl/ZnBr 2 >HCl/ZnCl 2 >>CF 3 CO 2 H/ZnCl 2 .The molecular weight M n of the polymers was directly proportional to monomer conversion and in good agreement with the calculated value assuming that one polymer chain forms per HB molecule. As model reactions, a series of mixtures of the HB-IVBE adduct and ZnX 2 were directly analyzed by 1 H NMR. The results shoswed that the activated species (C δ+ ...B δ- ...ZnX 2 ) is at least partly ionic
