Absorption and scattering from resonators in a free field as well as in walls are discussed. Considering losses due to viscosity, heat conduction, and radiation, it is shown that there exists an optimum value for the resonator volume at which the resonance absorption is maximum. The effect of damping the resonator by means of a screen in the aperture and in particular the dependence of the damping on the distance between the screen and the aperture is analyzed. Nonlinear effects on the absorption and the resonance frequency are also included.
