We observed time-transient spectral narrowing at 309 nm from the 5d-4f transition in Ce3+ ions doped into SrF2 crystal. The transmission and excitation spectra from the vacuum ultra-violet (VUV) to the visible were obtained for the Ce3+:SrF2 crystal. The crystal was optically excited by a KrF laser with 20 ns pulse duration. Spectral narrowing was detected using time-resolved spectroscopy. The linewidth at full-width-half-maximum for the 309 nm peak narrowed from similar to11 nm (1130 cm(-1)) to similar to7 nm (730 cm(-1)) for an optimized delay time of 30 ns (time between the onset of the excitation KrF laser pulse and the onset of the array detector). The linewidth regained its full width when the delay time was greater than 50 ns. The use of resonator cavity with a high reflectivity mirror and a quartz flat did not lead to laser oscillation probably due to excited state absorption by the Ce3+ ions.
