89 Copyright © 2013 by JSME [DOI: 10.1299/jmtl.6.89] TRANSLOG2012/J-RAIL2012 was held from 5 Dec. until 7 Dec. 2012 at Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, organized and sponsored by Transportation and Logistics Division (TRANSLOG), The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME). The objectives of TRANSLOG2012/J-RAIL2012 were to present and discuss the state of the art of the scientific and technical aspects of transportation, logistics and railway systems. This symposium brought the opportunity for expert engineers, researchers, scientists and students to communicate and exchange the common and the latest information on transportation, logistics and railway technologies. The scientific program of TRANSLOG2012/J-RAIL2012 consists of two key-note lectures, two panel discussions, two memorial lectures, one special session and 258 oral and poster presentations. The special issue on TRANSLOG2012/J-RAIL2012 contains one review paper and original papers selected from the papers presented in the conference. The quality of the papers has been guaranteed by a careful peer-review process. We would like to thank all authors for their interesting contributions. We also would like to express our sincere thanks to all of involved reviewers for their invaluable comments.
