Recently, I interviewed approximately 55 peacekeepers from 19 different countries who collectively served in 20 different missions (some of them served in two or more). The peacekeepers served in military, police, civilian, and unarmed civilian peacekeeping (UCP) roles. While they had different perspectives on many issues, all but three (all of whom had served in Bosnia, and two of whom had served in two other missions as well) believed that good relationships were a core element for effective peacekeeping, and generally more important than weapons. The following draws on analysis of these interviews.
