Globalization and the Politics of Institutional Reform in Japan is an ambitious attempt to analyze a wide range of changes in Japanese political institutions and policies with a single framework. It regards reform efforts in Japan as adjustments to liberal international order. What distinguishes this book from other studies on globalization and domestic policy changes is its focus on policy authority allocation and related political strategies as intervening variables that link the cause and the outcomes. It describes various institutional and policy changes as efforts to achieve a right balance between centralization and decentralization in the face of different challenges caused by shifts
