Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and their alkyl homologs are distributed in sediments throughout the world. The qualitative PAH pattern is remarkedly constant for most of the locations studied, and the quantitative PAH abundance increases with proximity to urban centers. These findings are consistent with anthropogenic combustion being the major source of these compounds. Two non-combustion sources of PAH were also noted: retene coming from abietic acid and perylene probably coming from various extended quinone pigments.
