Abstract Kinin-like activity evolved in mixtures of normal human platelet-deficient plasma containing human articular cartilage, chondroitin sulfate, heparin, or chitin sulfate. No such activity evolved when these agents were incubated with Hageman factor-deficient platelet-deficient plasma. The kinin-like agent was eluted from a Sephadex G-25 column at a peak near that of synthetic bradykinin; it was inactivated by chymotrypsin (100 μg per milliliter), but not by trypsin (20 μg per milliliter). Generation of kinin-like substances induced by components of articular cartilage may involve the participation of Hageman factor and may contribute to secondary inflammatory reactions in joints.
