THE suggestion that ageing may depend on immunological disorders1–6 has been prompted by observations that organs and physiological systems show wide differences in the time they need to use up their “quota of cellular programme”. Because the immunological system is fundamental for survival, if its function declines before other body functions, it would be a major determinant in the ageing processes.
