HE concept of interpreting past climates by phenological methods has T recently been critically examined by Le Roy Ladurie (1972). Using established temperature series for the 18th and 19th centuries, Le Roy Ladurie has shown conclusively that phenological series obtained from the dates of wine harvests in France and Switzerland correspond closely with the mean temperature of the spring-summer period. Viticultural series assembled back to the latter part of the 15th century, with further sequences to the 14th century, provide valuable sources of quantitative climatic data in a period before instrumental observations of temperature were being made. Following the establishment of the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in 1972, the phenological reports made by Robert Marsham, FRS, and his descendants in Norfolk were brought to my attention. Previous investigations of the Marsham record by Southwell (1875 and 1901) and Margary (1926) have already indicated its remarkable length and continuity and in the light of current studies in historical climatology it would seem appropriate to make a re-examination of the record, with particular reference to the'central England'temperature series of Manley.
