[CHsCeHjJ+ IAljCb]-. The complexes which form in the course of Friedel-Crafts reactions are believed to be carbonium ion salts of this kind. It is proposed that the high solubility of aluminum halides in these Friedel-Crafts complexes is due to the formation of a series ofhigher complexes of this kind, with the general formula R+[A1X<·«A1X,]~. It is further proposed that these complexes play an important role in most Friedel-Crafts reactions by furnishing a highly polar medium in which the ionic intermediates may form andreact.
