A survey is presented on recent progress in the understanding of the lattice dynamics in Nd2CuO4, (La, Sr)2CuO4 and YBa2Cu3O6/7. The data for the undoped samples can now largely be described within the framework of shell models for strongly ionic compounds. Some anomalous features observed in (La, Sr)2CuO4 are probably caused by anharmonic effects associated with the structural instability.
