OVA removed from the ovaries of artificially inseminated donors prior to ovulation, allowed to ovulatein vitro, and transferred to the oviducts of virgin hosts all failed to produce fertile eggs.Nine out of 11 eggs from ova taken from the ovaries of non-mated donors and transferred to the oviducts of artificially inseminated hosts proved to be fertile. Embryonic mortality was high, but this was largely due to infection acquired during the process of transfer.Fresh semen injected directly into the infundibulum, or into the body cavity immediately adjacent to the ovary and the infundibulum, generally led to the production of fertile eggs. The results of these experiments indicate that the ovum of the domestic fowl is normally fertilized after its release from the ovary, although the possibility that an occasional egg may be fertilized in the ovary is not excluded.
