Since the 1992 diplomatic normalization, attempts to upgrade relations between South Korea and China have revealed diverging interests at a deeper, geopolitical level. This Perspective shows that, although Beijing is not emerging as a strategic alternative to Washington for Seoul, China has begun to approach South Korea–China relations as an intermediary mechanism for handling its strategic competition with the United States.
