Samples of a wide range of soils of 1-6.9% C content and 14-13.8 C/N ratios were air dried for 3-15 weeks, and the amounts of C mineralized and NH4-N and NO3-N produced during 19 days after remoistening were determined and compared with mineralization in undried soils. For a given drying period, the mineralization was proportional to the C content of the soil, while mineralization in a given soil showed a significant linear relationship with the log of time the soil was in an air-dry state before moistening. Drying before moistening produced extra N equivalent to >1 ton and about 300 Ib/acre (NH4)2SO4 in high-humic and low-humic soils respectively. The possible mechanism, involving increased surface areas and decomposition of accumulated organic matter by enhanced microbial activity, is discussed (See also S. & F. XXIII [609]).
