A 9 ps short laser excitation is used to optically control the magnetization of a NiFe/FeMn exchange bias system on the picosecond timescale. Due to the laser excitation, the exchange coupling across the interface between the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic layer is reduced. Within the first 20 ps, a fast reduction of the exchange bias field to about 50% of its initial value is observed. The fast optical unpinning is followed by a slower recovery of the bias field. This relaxation time is on the order of 170 ps.
