This article presents a method for using the short wave bands of the AVHRR imaging sensor on the NOAA series of weather satellites for real-time mapping of the intense plankton blooms (''red tide'' events) that occur in the coastal waters Of many parts of the world. A similar method has been used in the open ocean to detect the highly reflective blooms due to coccolithophores, but the capabilities of the AVHRR for detecting other events in which surface waters are significantly brightened appear to have been overlooked. The article describes how real-time processing of data from a local receiving station may be used in a ''red tide watch'' for the frequent and rapid monitoring of large areas. The advantages and limitations of the processing algorithm are described, and sample data are discussed.
