The capacities for differentiation of various parts of the Fumdulus embryonic shield have been in the past only cursorily explored. The first experimental analysis of differentiation in this form undertaken by means of transplantation experiments (Oppenheimer,'36a) demonstrated fragments of the shield to be capable of differentiation after implantation into either embryonic or extra-embryonic regions of the gastrula, but no systematic study was performed, at that time or subsequently, of the comparative capacities for diff erentiation of different parts of the shield. It is accordingly the aim of this investigation to extend the results of the earlier one by analyzing the results of some additional intergastrular transplantations of portions of the shield, and the present communication supplements the former report by presenting some new data descriptive of the differentiation of secondary structures developed after implantation of anterior and posterior parts of the shield into the prospective head regions of the host gastrulae.
