0.0. The primary purpose of this paper is to define and describe a morphological class of 'adjectives' in Igbo. To do so, however, it is necessary to eliminate from consideration other noun modifiers which might be suggested as candidates for membership in such a class. Thus a survey of all noun modifiers is required in order to establish adjectives as a unique class. 0.1. In the literature on Niger-Congo languages, it is frequently said that a particular language has 'very few adjectives' or 'few if any adjectives' or 'no adjectives as a formally defined class'. Yet studies of Igbo, like those of many other languages, have suffered from a lack of precision in defining types of noun modifiers. Ward' lists as 'adjectives' a number of words whose glosses merely happen to be adjectives in English; these words display a variety of grammatical uses, and cannot be lumped together in any way justifiable on the basis of Igbo structure. Green2 shows more caution and sophistication, but unaccountably omits more than half of the forms defined as adjectives in this study, while including some which can better be treated as members of other classes (and two, apparently not adjectives either, which have not been recorded in the dialects with
