The theoretical framework of the paper consists of concepts from transnational migration research. With a focus on social practices in the domain of education, the aim is to show how migrants actively take part in the construction of transnational educational spaces. A transnational family network is the point of departure for a multisited ethnographic case study. The case study provides insights into the particular significance of education for female "care workers" from Brazil in Germany. It further shows how informal social protection, especially from social network sources, is important for the educational career paths of transnational migrants from disadvantaged social backgrounds.
