This article relates how Japan is gearing up to creating a regional augmentation, the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), which will provide additional Global Positioning System (GPS)-like signals designed to improve positioning capability for mobile users, as well as offering new communications services. In this article, members of the QZSS discuss the proposed system design and its expected benefits, as well as the current QZSS concept, design considerations and alternatives. This includes the satellite constellation, ground tracking network, system timing, and plans for a differential corrections service.
