Thelet-23gene is required for induction of theCaenorhabditis elegansvulva. It is shown thatlet-23encodes a putative tyrosine kinase of the epidermal growth factor receptor subfamily. Thus,let-23might encode the receptor for the inductive signal required for vulval development. Becauselet-23acts upstream oflet-60 rasin the vulval determination pathway, the identification of thelet-23product provides support for a linkin vivobetween tyrosine kinase growth factor receptors andrasproteins in a pathway of cell-type determination.
