Continuous-wave photoinduced absorption spectroscopy is applied to a bulk-heterojunction solar cell based on a blend of polymer and fullerene for the determination of carrier lifetime. This technique has several advantages with respect to conventional methods:(1) mobile and trapped carriers can be clearly distinguished;(2) carrier lifetime in a working solar cell under continuous irradiation can be determined; and (3) the same method can be used for both monomolecular and bimolecular recombination mechanisms. The latter two features make it possible to compare lifetimes under the open-and short-circuit conditions that can be determined using the same technique.
