Papillary squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) of the uterine cervix was originally described as a distinctive entity of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) by Randell et al. in 1986 (1). Histologically, PSCC is characterized by sheets of atypical basaloid cells, often non-keratinizing, showing moderate to severe nuclear atypia and supported by fibrovascular cores. Papillary squamous cell carcinoma seems to have a propensity for late recurrences. The relation between HPV and squamous cell carcinoma has been well established, and HPV16, 18, 31, and 35, so-called high-risk HPV types, are strongly associated with SCC. It remains unclear, however, whether PSCC is associated with HPV infection (2). In this report we present two cases of PSCC associated with HPV 16 DNA and discuss its histopathological features.
