Communication between physicians and patients is an increasingly important theme in health services research. However, the disparate approaches taken to research in this field makes it difficult to interpret and integrate findings within an overarching theoretical framework. Herein, we propose a structural framework to assist in the integration of research findings to date and in identification areas of research that have been overlooked. We discuss the impact of the different factors (goals, rules and frame factors) on the communication process. The medical context serving as foundation for research must be given stronger impact in future studies of communication in care.
