The author proposes FLOATS V: a real‐image‐based autostereoscopic display with a TFT‐LC filter. FLOATS is an autostereoscopic display technology which combines generation of floating real image and parallax presentation to show realistic 3‐D image within the viewer's reach. Earlier versions of FLOATS have used mechanical control of filters to keep on showing different images to each eye when the head of the viewer moves, which has often caused disturbances of stereoscopic views in case of fast motion or large inclination of the viewer's head. The system proposed in this paper uses an electronic LC filter instead of mechanical filters and succeeds in overcoming the problems of conventional FLOATS mentioned above.
