Convection rolls in a horizontal layer of an electrically conducting fluid heated from below are aligned with the direction of the horizontal component of a homogeneous magnetic field intersecting the layer as long as the Rayleigh number is close to its critical value. In this paper the influence of a purely horizontal magnetic field on the onset of three-dimensional instabilities is investigated in the limit of high magnetic diffusivity and low viscosity. It is found that the Lorentz force exerts a stabilizing influence on the onset of the oscillatory instability and that the region of stable roll solutions is enlarged considerably.
