Jonathan Prince, DDS,* Terry E. Donovan, DDS,** and Ronald G. Presswood, DDS*** University of Southern California, School of Dentistry, Los Angeles, Calif.0 ptimum esthetics is not achieved consistently with conventional ceramometal restorations, particularly in the area of the lalbiogingival margin. It is a common but disappointing experience to find metal collars on anterior restorations exposed or metal margins showing through thin, friable soft tissue. Although feldlspathic,‘,* aluminous, 3 and platinumbonded4y5 compl. ete porcelain veneer crowns may be used to overcome some esthetic problems, they have not achieved wide acceptance because of their inherent physical weakness. It appears to be easier to rationalize the minor esthetic deficiencies of porcelain-to-metal crowns than to contend with fracture of all-porcelain crowns. An alternate esthetic approach is the use of ceramometal crowns without metal collars. Several techniques for fabrication of such restorations have been described. 6-” These restorations combine the strength of ceramometal with the excellent esthetics of the complete porcelain labial margin. However, their use is limited primarily because of technical difficulties involved in their fabrication. The number of technique articles published on this subject is an indication that the search continues for a simpler, more predictable method.
