Extreme cold may serve as a valuable phy-sical agent in surgery. It fulfills many of the criteria for an ideal method of destroying biological tissue. These criteria are reversibility, consistent reproducibility, sharp, delimitation, hemostasis, flexibility, safety, simplicity, and rapidity of application. The method is scientifically controllable or modifiable. Cryogenic neurosurgical techniques were applied to basal ganglia surgery, intracerebral neoplasms, and hypophysectomy.
