WE HAVE DICSCRIBED a series of cells in the monkey superior colliculus related to visual stimulation and eye movement (4, 5, 17). III a vertical pene tration through the superior colliculus &e visual receptive fields and the movement fields of these cells are all topo-graphically organized and all lie in the same area of the contralateral visual field. In the present experimen ts we destroyed a small volume of superior colliculus related to one area of the visual field in order to see if it was involved in the transfer of visual information to the eye-movement system. We recorded from cells in the colliculus with a microelectrode, located the receptive fields of these cells in the visual field, and had the monkey make saccades to spots of light within this area of the visual field. Then we ablated this passing current part of through the the colliculus by same microelectrode and determinecl how well the monkey could make saccades to points in the part of the visual field which was no longer liculus. represented
