The field of cancer biology has been progressing rapidly, and several new developments have made a significant impact on prevention and therapy of the disease. Because of the limitations imposed on human subject research, experimental tumor model systems have been established for investigation which provide the necessary tools for preclinical trials and the development of new areas of research. While, in general, experimental tumor systems are not identical or directly comparable to human spontaneous neoplasia, their study has nevertheless revealed several findings which have been applicable in man. Also, experimental tumor model systems are characterized by unique properties, and each of these properties can be analyzed independently of other factors. The experimental tumor model system to be described here presents a spontaneous murine tumor which has several apparently unique properties and is in many ways an unconventional experimental system. This brief review addresses several of the known properties of the spontaneous reticulum cell sarcoma (RCS) tumor in SJL/J mice.
