Given the growing number of PhD graduates and the breadth of research opportunities that exist beyond academia, there is no singular, linear path to a successful research career. Researchers are applying and enhancing their skills in charities, corporations, consultancies, local authorities, health services, start-ups, and a variety of other settings. For researchers who are curious about their options, there is a dizzying maze of pathways to consider. This chapter aims to shine a light on what non-academic research careers can look like, including some of the opportunities and challenges involved. It explores the reasons researchers might choose to pursue applied research roles, the steps we can take towards finding them, and the parts of the learning curve that can feel particularly steep. Focusing on the environment of new start-ups, it discusses the ways in which early-stage innovation can foster collaboration and creativity and its role in advancing scientific knowledge. It ends with a few final reflections and recommendations, including a discussion of the need for greater permeability between different research settings, and visibility of the opportunities and impact created by applied research.
