Wild type strains of Haemophilus influenzae R d consist of two phenotypic classes of bacteria which differ in their abilities to restrict and modify phage HP1. Each of these classes r D− m D− and r D+ m D+ is unstable and segregates several percent of bacterla of the alternative phenotype. In addition stable r D− m D− bacteria occur spontaneously in r D+ m D+ cultures and an r D− m D+ mutant was isolated after mutagenesis of an r D+ m D+ strain.
