When motile E. coli are placed at one end of a capillary tube containing galactose as the energy source, they move out as 2 sharp clearly visible bands. The first band consumes all of the O2 and a part of the galactose, while the second band consumes all ofthe residual galactose anaerobically. The E. coli probably shows chemotaxis toward O2 and galactose. The mechanism of chemotaxis is discussed.
