METHODSWe conducted a secondary analysis of the Gynecology and Lubricant Effects (GALE) study, a 10-week observational study in Baltimore, MD conducted between May 2017 and March 2020 that evaluated the impact of vaginal lubricant used during transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) on the vaginal microenvironment. 15 Participants were older than 18 years, assigned female at birth, and were referred for TVUS for various indications, including pelvic mass, pelvic pain, and abnormal periods. Exclusion criteria included diabetes, other immunosuppressive conditions, current pregnancy, antibiotic or antifungal use in the prior month, lubricant use within a week of TVUS, pelvic inflammatory disease, or cancers of the uterus, ovaries, or pelvic structures. Participants were also excluded at baseline if nucleic acid amplification testing of cervical samples confirmed Neisseria gonorrhea, Chlamydia trachomatis, or Trichomonas vaginalis infections (BD MAX CT/GC/TV), or serologic testing detected HIV (Abbot ARCHITECT HIV Ag/Ab Combo) or syphilis (BD Macro-Vue).
