The gross modeling of bone involves extensive and cumulative changes in microscopic structure. The purpose of this study is to describe and illustrate the sequence of remodeling changes and to show how details of histological structure are correlated. Longitudinal and transverse serial sections of representative bones from an age series of rhesus monkeys and alizarin-treated white rats were studied. The complex organization of compact bone is a result of reconstruction and remodeling processes which involve repeated reversals in direction of periosteal and endosteal growth and the formation of different varieties of bone tissue. A multi-layered cortex is produced which is composed of distinct zones. The distribution of bone tissue types and the architectural arrangement of zones are directly associated with regional remodeling circumstances. Local changes in shape and shifts in axis during gross remodeling involve a process termed osseous drift. Differences in bone structure between distantly related species are explained on the basis of modeling changes and differential rates of growth.
