In a survey, by means of a questionnaire, of 287 pony clubs (65% of total) 491 ponies out of 17641 were infected with 'sweet itch' (summer dermatitis). The regional prevalence rate in England was 2.85%, Wales 1.52%, Scotland 2.9%, Ireland 2.8% and the Channel Islands 2.5%. The prevalence rate was very low from pony clubs situated in areas at or above 1000 feet.
