While the contributions of nanoscience and technology to medicine have been impactful, some experts claim to be disappointed that nanomedicine did not deliver on its promises. 1 Before weighing in on these opinions, it is important to clarify that among the diverse applications of nanotechnology in medicine, therapeutics have received the most attention, leading to a perception that nanomedicine is mainly focused on using therapeutic or imaging nanoparticles to improve treatment efficacy and toxicity reduction by controlling drug biodistribution. 1 While it is indisputable that nanocarriers have contributed to improvement of treatment efficacy, pharmacokinetics, crossing of biological barriers, and safety, the field is poised to expand beyond the use of therapeutic nanoparticles. 1− 3 This is feasible through the use of intrinsic nanomaterial properties that are capable of improving over current diagnostic, imaging, and therapeutic modalities. 4 We can also use the experience gained during the development of the first wave of therapeutic applications to achieve major impact on immunotherapy, neurology, cardiovascular and infectious diseases, anti-inflammatory and antiaging applications, regenerative medicine, skincare and orthopedics. 1 These efforts depend on the active involvement of clinicians, regulatory agencies, and an interdisciplinary workforce to promote cooperation between physicochemical and biomedical sciences in establishing nanomedicine as an integral component of the healthcare system.
