The "constriction rings" of leukocytes in tissue culture are caused by external factors in the culture medium and do not play an essential role in the movement. The locomotion of leukocytes is essentially similar to the movement of amoebae and essentially the same plasmasol plasmagel changes occur in moving leukocytes as described by Mast in Amoeba proteus. Observations on moving leukocytes indicate that during locomotion a contraction of the plasmagel takes place. The bearing of the modern concepts of protoplasmic structure on the mechanism of the plasmosol plasmagel changes and of the contraction of the plasmagel are briefly discussed.
