The smallest CNBr fragment derived from the .beta. subunit of Synechococcus sp. 6301 C-phycocyanin, the blue heptapeptide, was investigated by 360-MHz 1H NMR spectroscopy. The peptide portion, heptapeptide, was synthesized independently and used in comparative spectroscopic analysis. These studies led to complete assignment of the structure of the peptide-linked phycocyanobilin and elucidation of the nature of the thioether chromophore-peptide linkage.
