This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study on the strength of longitudinally stiffened steel plates subjected to uniformly distributed edge compression in one direction. The plates may be thought of as flange plates in box girder bridges. The compressive strength of stiffened plates is determined from an elastic-plastic buckling theory with residual stresses taken into consideration. Bijlaard's deformation theory is adopted to describe the moment-curvature relations of buckled plates. In addition to the theoretical study, 25 failure tests were planned using simply supported plates with 3-5 equidistant longitudinal stiffeners of flat type. The 12 of these 25 tests completed to date are described.
