again I have heard these words, their implication-linguistics was a garnish to a teacher's education. Linguistics had, so to speak, arrived. It had its place, but one could very well do without it. For a long time this attitude was incomprehensible to me, particularly since I had found some aspect of linguistics indispensable in the English classroom, not merely for explaining grammar and usage, but in approaching or clarifying a literary work. And then I had the opportunity of conducting weekly seminars in linguistics for teachers during the school year. At first I expected my evangelical fervor and enthusiasm to help me carry the field. But soon it was clear that the class was balking: the teachers were struggling with new symbols, with new terminology, with a slew of new concepts which could never be assimilated in a crash course.
