A method of predicting the stereochemical outcome of the Claisen rearrangement has been developed.Using the results of this study, we have devised a route to trans trisubstituted olefinic bonds for use in isoprenoid synthesis. This route has been used for the synthesis of squalene and both racemic and optically active forms of the C-18 insect juvenile hormone.
