Drawing on a subsample of socially integrated female drug users, this paper looks at the participation and experience of women on the retail level of the drug trade. It aims to better understand the processes and factors, which encourage or hinder women’s involvement in drug dealing activities. In contrast to most research, the focus lies on private drug markets rather than street markets. Furthermore, it centres on socially inconspicuous female drug users whose involvement in the illicit drug economy is mostly limited to small-scale distribution activities. In total, 51 female drug users participated in structured face-to-face interviews. All women were recruited from out-of-treatment settings through snowball sampling.Paying close attention to the respondents’ points of view as they were expressed in the interviews, the women’s strategies for acquiring and financing drugs as well as their involvement in drug distribution activities are explored.Regarding their use, the majority of women were regular cannabis users but used other illicit substances (mostly party drugs) rather frequently as well. Most acquired drugs through friends or private dealers whom they had known for years.Their financial resources for illicit drugs mainly came from legal sources. More than half of the interviewees had supplied drugs at least at some point in their life. Nine women were still involved in dealing activities at the time of the interview. Fourteen women had ever made any profit through supplying drugs, thus only a minority of the sample had ever dealt drugs in a genuine term.Initiation into dealing was rarely a profit-driven choice and most interviewees distanced themselves from the identity of a drug dealer. The majority managed to maintain a non-deviant identity: together with their social responsibilities this played a significant role for reducing and maturing-out of dealing drugs.
