Glucose 1, 6_bisphosphate(Glc-1, 6-P*) was first shown by Leloir et al.[11 to be the coenzyme in the phosphoglucomutase reaction. Recent studies in our and other laboratories have revealed that this compound acts as a potent regulator of several key enzymes in carbohydrate metabolism. We have also found that the amounts of Glc-1, 6-P2 in muscle change under various physiological, hormonal, and pathological conditions, with concomitant changes in the activities of the enzymes which are affected by this regulator. All these findings point to the unique role of this compound in the regulation of the different pathways of glucose metabolism.
