Tropical countries increasingly face the burden of drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum infections. Malaria-related mortality of African children rises in contrast to the decline of the overall mortality of children under five years of age in sub-Saharan Africa within the past four decades. The disaster can largely be attributed to antimalarial drug resistance in most malaria-endemic countries. The principles and mechanisms of chemoresistance in Plasmodium falciparum, infections, in addition to the development and evaluation of new drugs and drug combinations, are major concerns of current malaria research and control strategies.
