There are a number of paths through endothelium. Their relative importance varies with the particle, the local conditions, and the endo-thelial site. The marked increase above normal permeability caused by various physiological and pathological traumata is due to the opening of many intercellular junctions. In the presence of movements, the open junctions act as "inlet valves" and allow the lymphatics to function as "force pumps." Severe heat trauma also causes discontinuities in the plasma membrances and allows more and larger particles to traverse the cytoplasmic matrix.
