Wet synthetic sediments consisting of mixtures of quartz and randomly oriented magnetic grains acquire, in the course of a few tens of hours, a remanent magenetism directed along an applied weal magnetic field. These results show that the hypothesis of post-depositonal bodily rotation of grains, which has been previously invoked to explain the observed natural remanent magnetization of certain slump, beds, is a physically plausible mechanism by which a sediment containing detrital iron mineral particles can acquire a remanent magnetization accurately aligned along the geomagnetic field.
