The purpose of this paper is to discuss in plain English the role of V & V in confirming that a system product conforms to its appropriate set of related specified requirements. It is not expected that this discussion will once and forever settle the differences that exist in perceptions and practices of V & V. It is the intent, however, to remove some of the confusion and misunderstanding surrounding V & V with the expectation that the engineering of a system can thus be improved.
