Fetal mortality after implantation and at parturition were studied in adult mice which had been treated with pregnant mares'' serum and human chorionic gonadotropin. Between 3 and 32 embryos were implanted. In a few treated and control mice, all of the embryos died after implantation. Death of all embryos was not due to the implantation of large numbers of embryos. Most mice carried living fetuses to 18 1/2 days gestation. Many mice had more than 20 living fetuses, the highest number being 27. Fetal mortality before 11 1/2 days gestation was independent of overcrowding and accounted for approximately 16% of the implanted embryos. Mortality between 11 1/2 and 18 1/2 days increased with the numbers of embryos implanted, 11.4% of the fetuses dying in females with 14 or more implanted embryos. Dead fetuses were found more frequently on fused than on normal placentae. Heterogeneity was found between mice in their ability to maintain living fetuses to 11 1/2 days gestation or, especially wher. many embryos were implanted, to 18 1/2 days gestation. More resorbing embryos were found in the cervical half of the uterus, especially next to the cervix, though the difference was not marked. Living fetuses in crowded uteri were extremely small at 18 1/2 days gestation. Fetal mortality at parturition was highest in mice with many implanted embryos, few or no fetuses surviving birth if more than 19 were present in a female. The proportion of fetuses dying at parturition was similar in treated and control mice if the same number of embryos were implanted. Males and females survived parturition equally well. Mean litter size was similar in treated and control mice.
